Winter is for getting in shape! December practices are for experienced rowers only, and are generally 3-4 days per week. After the New Year, experienced and new rowers work out at HRC 5 days a week, using ergometers, weights, and occasionally rowing on the water as weather and experience permit. Some rowers may compete in indoor rowing competitions, but the winter is focused on fitness. Rowers who are new in the winter, in addition to getting fit, will be taught the basics of technique on rowing machines and will take a trip to nearby indoor rowing tanks to learn the stroke in a more “boat-like” setting.
