In order to become the most competitive team possible we are looking for maximum participation at winter training. In order to achieve maximum participation we are once again INCLUDING WINTER TRAINING in the cost of Spring 2018. More information is available on the Winter Training page of our website, CLICK HERE to visit that page. While we are not requiring our returning athletes to attend winter workouts we are highly encouraging it. The only way to gain significant speed in the spring is to hit the water fit, & the best way to stay fit is to workout as a team & push each other to perform to each individual’s very best.

Spring 2018 will once again be open to novice & varsity athletes, alike. NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED to join the competitive spring team, simply a willingness to learn new things & work hard. We will have coaches available for all levels of athletes allowing everyone to participate in races throughout the season.  As with past years we will have sculling & sweep opportunities which will be determined by the size of the team. Our goal is to qualify multiple boats for USRowing Youth National Championships which will be held in Sacramento, CA this June. As we continue to grow in size we will continue to grow in speed, feel free to recruit a friend to join the fun. See below for 2018 program specifics.

Rowers participating in this program will be expected to:

  • Attend practice six days a week, with any absences excused in advance (and kept to a minimum). Coaches should be notified whenever an athlete will miss practice, the sooner the better. Good rule of thumb- If an athlete is too sick to go to school, they are too sick to attend practice, but if they make it through a school day, practice should stay on the agenda.
  • Spring season practices begin on Saturday, February 17th & runs through late May (or mid June for those who qualify for Nationals).
  • Practices will be Monday*- Friday, 4:00-6:30p (drop off no earlier than 3:45p, pick up by 6:45p) and Saturday, 8:30-11:00a (drop off no earlier than 8:15a, pick up by 11:15a).
  • Commit to the training plan set forward by the coaching staff. This may include body weight circuits, or other such workouts, to be performed outside of practice.
  • Commit to competing in up to 7 regattas, 8 for those varsity athletes who qualify for Nationals.

*Monday practices will be optional for our NOVICE rowers. Those athletes who choose to come on Mondays will either receive extra on the water technical instruction or get in an extra land-based conditioning workout.

The Program Director for WBC Juniors is Joe Sullivan & he will once again serve as Head Coach of the spring season. Katherine Cousart is once again with us for the spring & we are ecstatic to have her back! Please join us in welcoming Steve Kowalik to the coaching staff; Steve is new to Whitemarsh but NOT to the Philadelphia rowing community. He has extensive coaching experience with all levels of rowers, & he is a competitive masters’ rower. All of our coaches will be working towards the same goal- creating the most successful junior club program on the east coast & “graduating” well rounded athletes who love the sport.
