2017 Spring Middle School Training

2017 Dates Now Available

WBC’s Middle School Rowing Program is a fun, low key way to learn and/or develop the basics of rowing.  We are open to middle school students from all schools, 11 years old or older.  We encourage all those who have done a learn to row or already participated in our middle school program to continue to develop your skills by joining us again.  We also accept complete beginners into our spring middle school program, no experience required. Our Spring Middle School Program will primarily focus on sculling (2 oars for each rower), but if the group is large enough we will also learn sweep rowing (1 oar for each rower).  We like to start all our young rowers out with sculling as it is better to learn this first.  In sculling you get a better feel for the movement of the boat and your movement in the boat.  It is also better for the young bodies to learn sculling as you build both sides of your body equally.  Our main goal is to give the rowers the basic skills that will allow them to be good, strong rowers in high school if they choose to continue to row.
It is also a goal as the weather gets nicer and the water warmer to give all the rowers an opportunity to row by themselves in a gig (a wider, flatter bottomed single) or a regular 1x.
We look forward to your joining us for another great year on the water.
The middle school program consists of 11 sessions that will start on Saturday, April 1st, with practices running through Sunday, June 5th. If WBC needs to postpone/cancel practices for any reason we will hold makeup sessions on June 10th & 11th. Practices will start at 11:30a (drop off no earlier than 11:15a) & wrap up by 1:30p (pick up no later than 1:45p). Practice is RAIN OR SHINE! The safety of your child is our number one priority; if the river is too high or too fast for rowing we will still hold practice but the athletes will be kept on land. If for any reason we need to cancel practice (typically we only do this because of flooding) we will contact participants via email.

The cost of the 2017 Middle School Program is $465.

CLICK HERE for directions and information about parking. Space is very limited; carpools are highly encouraged! For parents who choose to stay for practice we are asking you to move your vehicle to one of our satellite lots in order to leave room for club members & those juniors who drive themselves. While our enrollment has continued to grow, our parking lot, unfortunately, has remained the same size. We thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
